Approximately 5,500 people gathered in Grant Park in downtown Chicago for the inaugural Pride In The Park in June 2019. Since many of my submitted images have been posted on Facebook, search Rhode Island Pride, I will choose images, for the most part, that are not included in the folder posted on Facebook. Is There Going To Be A Pride In Chicago Taking place this summer 26 27 at the same park twice, Pride in the Park will once again include the chance to visit the Statue of Liberty and witness the closing of the Civil War. Just a fun fabulous event, in my opinion, not to be missed.
The crowds enormous and the gaiety second to none. The photography group were great and having an inside pass, so to speak, for access to photograph Pride went way beyond my expectations. With some hesitancy I accepted and am very pleased I did. One thing led to another and before I knew it I had an offer to join the photography troupe for this years’ Pride. Turned out he was a formal photographer for Gay Pride Committee. I was sitting outside the Dark Lady during the recent PVD Fest enjoying a shot of tequila and a beer when engaging in a conversation with another person who also was armed with a camera and lens.
This year I went with 6 images and returned with one, learning that that person has since moved to another State. ‘I’m a Jamaican girl that sings Dancehall music when Dancehall is associated with homophobia.This is the third year I have photographed Pride and have been looking forward to this years celebration for the simple reason that this festivity is just “out and out fun.” Last year I printed up some images to take with me with the intent of seeing the person in the image then gifting them with it. UK Black Pride is important in helping to eliminate many of the barriers that are still in place. ‘However, there are still many barriers to be broken down in the Black and LGBTI community. The riots began after a raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, Manhattan almost. ‘I feel that society’s attitude towards homosexuality has come a long way,’ Harley says. Pride Month takes place every June, the same month the Stonewall Riots took place in 1969. Headlining the UK Black Pride 2018 stage are performers from across the diaspora, including singer Alicai Harley. Early on the morning of Saturday, June 28, 1969, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons rioted following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar at 43 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City. ‘The lineup has been chosen not only because each performer is talented, inspiring and captivating, but also because each reveals to us who we can be.’ The headliners at UK Black Pride 2018 Jamaican singer Alicai Harley will perform on the main stage at UK Black Pride. ‘When an organization as groundbreaking and important as UK Black Pride curates performances for the community it matters. ‘ I have undertaken the task of curating the UK Black Pride 2018 stage personally and seriously because it is an opportunity for us all to see what bodies of color are capable of and, in the current climate, understanding that we can be what we want is really cemented within us when we do this for ourselves,’ she says.
